Central Plains Experimental Range Study for Long-Term Agroecosystem Research in Nunn, Colorado

Central Plains Experimental Range Study for Long-Term Agroecosystem Research in Nunn, Colorado The Central Plains Experimental Range (CPER) is a site with the The Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network, which consists of 18 sites across the continental United States (US) sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, universities and non-governmental organizations. LTAR scientists seek to determine ways to ensure sustainability and enhance food production (and quality) and ecosystem services at broad regional scales. They are conducting common experiments across the LTAR network to compare traditional production strategies (“business as usual or BAU) with aspirational strategies, which include novel technologies and collaborations with farmers and ranchers. Within- and cross-site network success towards achieving the desired outcomes of enhancing quality food production and reducing environmental impact requires that LTAR scientists and collaborators have well-timed access to various data. We are striving to create opportunities to package and share long-term legacy observations from each site, with new data and metadata in useable, well documented and consistent formats for them.

Data from: Decoupled recovery of ecological communities after reclamation

Grassland restoration is largely focused on creating plant communities that match reference conditions. However, these communities reflect only a subset of the biodiversity of grassland systems. We conducted a multi-trophic study to assess ecosystem recovery following energy development for oil and gas extraction in northern U.S. Great Plains rangelands. We compared soil factors, plant species composition and cover, and nematode trophic structuring between reclaimed oil and gas well sites ("reclaims") that comprise a chronosequence of two – 33 years since reclamation and adjacent, undeveloped rangeland at distances of 50 m and 150 m from reclaim edges. Soils and plant communities in reclaims did not match those on undeveloped rangeland even after 33 years. Reclaimed soils had higher salt concentrations and pH than undeveloped soils. Reclaims had lower overall plant cover, a greater proportion of exotic and ruderal plant cover and lower native plant species richness than undeveloped rangeland. However, nematode communities appear to have recovered following reclamation. Although total and omni-carnivorous nematode abundances differed between reclaimed well sites and undeveloped rangeland, community composition and structure did not. These findings suggest that current reclamation practices recover the functional composition of nematode communities, but not soil conditions or plant communities. Our results show that plant communities have failed to recover through reclamation: high soil salinity may create a persistent impediment to native plant growth and ecosystem recovery.

Data from: Whole Genome Sequences of the Raspberry and Strawberry Pathogens Phytophthora rubi and P. fragariae

Phytophthora rubi and P. fragariae are two closely related soil-borne oomycete plant pathogens that exhibit strong morphological and physiological similarities but are specialized to infect different hosts of economic importance, namely, raspberry and strawberry. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of these two Phytophthora species as a first step toward understanding the genomic processes underlying plant host adaptation in these pathogens.

Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN)

The Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) is an online portal for information about agricultural genetic resources that are managed by the Agricultural Research Service of USDA, along with U.S. partnering organizations. The content includes general information about ARS animal, microbial and plant germplasm collections, most notably the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). The NPGS curates more than 600,000 active accessions of living plant material at 20 genebank locations around the U.S., and makes small quantities available globally to plant breeders and other professional scientists. GRIN also documents activities of Crop Germplasm Committees (CGC) that support the NPGS. The CGCs are comprised of public and private sector subject matter experts for a given crop (there are currently 44 CGCs) who voluntarily provide input on technical and operational matters to the NPGS. The site includes two searchable datasets: the ARS Rhizobium collection and Plant Variety Protection Certificates. The Rhizobium collection is living bacteria that nodulate the roots of leguminous plants symbiotically to provide nitrogen fixation. Samples are available to research scientists globally upon request. The Plant Variety Protection (PVP) Certificates are issued by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) of USDA to provide intellectual property protection to registered new varieties of plants that are propagated by seed or tubers. The GRIN site allows queries of PVPs by certificate number, name of the crop, variety name, or certificate holder, all using data provided by the AMS.

Raw data for urban trees in California communitiesSource

This study used data from field plots in urban areas to describe forest structure (e.g., tree numbers, density, basal area, species composition) for six land use categories in six California climate zones: Southern California Coast, Inland Empire, Inland Valley, Southwest Desert, Northern, and Interior West. Two types of field plot data were utilized. The first set of data include 702 randomly sampled 0.04 hectare (ha) plots obtained from i-Tree Eco plot data for Los Angeles (in 2007-2008), Santa Barbara (2012) and the Sacramento area (2007). The second set of data (687 plots, in 2011) consisted of 0.067 ha (four 0.017 ha subplots) plots based on the Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plot design. The number of plots collected varied by climate zone and a total of 3,796 trees were sampled. Data collection included percentage of tree canopy cover over the plot, tree species, stem diameter at breast height (1.37 meters above ground, dbh), tree height, crown width, distance and azimuth to buildings that fit the requirements as specified in the i-Tree Eco and Urban FIA manuals.

Raw urban street tree inventory data for 49 California citiesSource

This data publication contains urban tree inventory data for 929,823 street trees that were collected from 2006 to 2013 in 49 California cities. Fifty six urban tree inventories were obtained from various sources for California cities across five climate zones. The five climate zones were based largely on aggregation of Sunset National Garden Book's 45 climate zones. Forty-nine of the inventories fit the required criteria of (1) included all publicly managed trees, (2) contained data for each tree on species and diameter at breast height (dbh) and (3) was conducted after 2005. Tree data were prepared for entry into i-Tree Streets by deleting unnecessary data, matching species to those in the i-Tree database, and establishing dbh size classes. Data included in this publication include tree location (city, street name and number), diameter at breast height, species name and/or species code, and tree type.

The GRIN-Global Project

GRIN-Global is an ongoing international collaborative project to develop shared and open-source applications that help manage plant germplasm collections. The software was jointly developed by the Agricultural Research Service of USDA, Global Crop Diversity Trust, and Bioversity International, with the first version released in December 2011. The ARS has used GRIN-Global to manage its plant germplasm collections, the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, since November 2015. GRIN-Global is an extension of Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) information management system, which was first developed by ARS beginning in the mid-1980s. GRIN-Global is comprised of a suite of computer applications that are used internally by genebank staff to curate collections, as well as a public website through which scientists can query the database and request samples of germplasm through a shopping cart process.

US Municipal Desalination PlantsSource

This submission presents results and observations from a series of surveys of US municipal desalination plants conducted during the last 20 years. The surveys were conducted to determine the number, characteristics, and concentrate disposal practices of US desalination plants. Each survey was intended to identify and contact each US plant that produces 25,000 gpd or more. This cutoff eliminated smaller plants that serve truck stops, mobile home parks, hospitals, campgrounds, etc. Succeeding surveys did not undertake to recontact all previously contacted plants but focused primarily on plants built since the initial survey.

VT Biodiversity Project - Plant and Animal Species AtlasSource

(Link to Metadata) This database contains town-level totals of documented species records for several plant and animal taxa including vascular plants, trees, bryophytes, ferns, fish, mammals, and reptiles & amphibians. Also contained are number of Black Bear kills by town for the years 1980-1996, and number of non-hunter Moose deaths by town for the years 1980-1997. A breeding bird atlas collected at finer resolution than town-level is included but was not summarized by town. Data were originally acquired from Vermont's Agency of Natural Resources (ANR), U.S. Forest Service, museum and herbarium collections, and other published or unpublished atlases.
