Abstract: The Rail Network is a comprehensive database of the nation's railway system at the 1:100,000 scale. The data set covers all 50 States plus the District of Columbia. Purpose: The data set provides location and partial attribute information for use in national and regional network analysis applications. A Cartographic Feature File (CFF) is a digital data file containing a vector representation of the point and line features shown on a Forest Service Primary Base Series (PBS) map. The feature categories contained in the CFF are transportation (roads and trails), streams and water bodies, political and administrative boundaries, land ownership, and other cultural features. Elevation contours, vegetation, and text (geographic names, labels, etc.) are not included in the CFF. CFFs are formatted according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangle convention: 1:24,000-scale, 7.5-minutes latitude by 7.5-minutes longitude format. CFFs provide a consistent base set of geographic features for use in Forest Service geographic information systems (GIS). CFFs can be used individually or joined to form larger project areas. CFFs are also used as the source for the automated production of PBS maps.
