- The AVoided Emissions and geneRation Tool (AVERT) evaluates how energy policies and programs such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electric vehicles lead to changes in emissions of particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and ammonia (NH3) from electric power plants at a county, state, or regional level. AVERT is a free tool designed to meet the needs of state air quality planners, energy officials, public utility commission staff, environmental agency staff, professionals in the clean energy field, people working on climate planning, and other interested stakeholders.1Licence not specifiedover 2 years ago

- The National Emissions Inventory (NEI) is a comprehensive and detailed estimate of air emissions of criteria pollutants, criteria precursors, and hazardous air pollutants from air emissions sources. The NEI is released every three years based primarily upon data provided by State, Local, and Tribal air agencies for sources in their jurisdictions and supplemented by data developed by the US EPA. The NEI is built using the Emissions Inventory System (EIS) first to collect the data from State, Local, and Tribal air agencies and then to blend that data with other data sources. - TRI tracks the management of certain toxic chemicals that may pose a threat to human health and the environment. U.S. facilities in different industry sectors must report annually how much of each chemical is released to the environment and/or managed through recycling, energy recovery and treatment. (A "release" of a chemical means that it is emitted to the air or water, or placed in some type of land disposal.) The information submitted by facilities is compiled in the Toxics Release Inventory. https://www.epa.gov/toxics-release-inventory-tri-program/learn-about-toxics-release-inventory#What is the Toxics Release Inventory? - Total deposition maps and the underlying data have been produced using wet deposition measurements from the NADP National Trends Network (NTN) and estimates of dry deposition using a method that combines ambient air monitoring data with output from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system. This method of estimating dry deposition gives priority to measurement data near the location of the monitor and priority to CMAQ data in areas where monitoring data are not available. Additionally, CMAQ output is used for species such as peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN), dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrous acid (HONO) and organic nitrate that are not routinely measured, but likely contribute a significant amount to the total nitrogen budget. The sections below provide details on the monitoring and modeling data and methodology. In the final section, notes and caveats are provided that discuss limitations of the data. Note that this product is dynamic and will be updated as new monitoring and modeling data become available and as improvements to the methodology are implemented. Therefore, it is critical to note the version number associated with the data. The version number consists of a 4-digit year and a 2-digit release number. - Dioxin and dioxin-like compounds data are reported on the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Reporting Form R Schedule 1. There are seventeen distinct members of this chemical category listed under TRI. In addition to the total grams released for the entire category, facilities must report the quantity for each individual member. Although useful, total releases are not the best measure of the actual toxicity of these compounds because each compound has its own level of toxicity. To account for how compounds vary in toxicity, EPA calculates weighted values called toxic equivalents (TEQs) from the individual mass quantity data reported by facilities and the associated Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEFs). TEQs allow for a better understanding of the toxicity of releases and waste management activities at facilities that report to the TRI Program. - Ecoregions are areas where ecosystems (and the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources) are generally similar. This ecoregion framework is derived from Omernik (1987) and from mapping done in collaboration with EPA regional offices, other Federal agencies, state resource management agencies, and neighboring North American countries. Designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components, ecoregions denote areas of similarity in the mosaic of biotic, abiotic, terrestrial, and aquatic ecosystem components with humans being considered as part of the biota. These regions are critical for structuring and implementing ecosystem management strategies across Federal agencies, state agencies, and nongovernmental organizations that are responsible for different types of resources within the same geographic areas. Ecoregions are identified by analyzing the patterns and composition of biotic and abiotic phenomena that affect or reflect differences in ecosystem quality and integrity. These phenomena include geology, landforms, soils, vegetation, climate, land use, wildlife, and hydrology.
