Note: Mohamed bin Zayed Nature ReserveThe reserve, located in the central western part of the Island of Bahrain, was established in 1976 under the name Al Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve. With a terrestrial area exceeding five square kilometers, it became the first natural reserve in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the first project of its kind in the region. The reserve aims to breed and protect rare and endangered Arabian wildlife species. In December 2025, by Royal Decree of His Majesty the King, the reserve was renamed as Mohamed bin Zayed Nature Reserve on the United Arab Emirates’ celebration of its 54th Union Day. This renaming reflects appreciation for the role played by His Highness the President of the United Arab Emirates in strengthening the fraternal and historic relations between the two neighboring countries, as well as for his positions that embody the highest meanings of affection toward the Kingdom of Bahrain and its people. The reserve showcases unique native species of plants and animals that represent Bahrain’s desert environment and the rich biodiversity of the Arabian region. Among the most notable species are the Arabian oryx, the Bahraini sand gazelle (Reem gazelle), the Markh plant (Broom Bush), palm trees, as well as many other plants, birds, mammals, and reptiles of ecological importance.
