Overview

The ABS Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA) ranks areas according to their relative socio-economic advantage and disadvantage using Census data. SEIFA is created on a number of different geographic boundaries including Local Government Area (LGA), SA1, SA2, Suburbs and Postcodes. The publication includes interactive maps and data downloads. SEIFA is a collection of four indexes, each summarising a different aspect of the socio-economic conditions in an area using different Census data: 1. Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage (IRSAD) focuses on both advantage and disadvantage. 2. Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage (IRSD) focuses on relative socio-economic disadvantage. 3. Index of Education and Occupation (IEO) focuses on relative education and occupation advantage and disadvantage. 4. Index of Economic Resources (IER) focuses on economic advantage and disadvantage.
