The purpose of a national park is to 'preserve a larger contiguous area of a certain landscape type in its natural state or in substantially unchanged condition' (from the Environmental Code). The state owns all land in a national park. The national parks are to be representative landscape types that are preserved in their natural state, but they must also be scenic or unique environments that can provide strong natural experiences.
