- Combined heat and power (CHP)—sometimes referred to as cogeneration—provides a cost-effective, near-term opportunity to improve our nation's energy, environmental, and economic future. CHP is an efficient and clean approach to generating on-site electric power and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source. The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Technical Potential in the United States market analysis report provides data on the technical potential in industrial facilities and commercial buildings for “topping cycle” CHP, waste heat to power CHP (WHP CHP), and district energy CHP in the U.S. Data are provided nationally by CHP system size range, facility type, and state. Each state’s technical potential is shown in detail on state profile pages that include break-downs by size range and facility type. The CHP Deployment Program provides stakeholders with the resources necessary to identify CHP market opportunities and support implementation of CHP systems. The DOE database of CHP installations provides information about CHP systems currently operating in the United States including locations, organizations served, and facility characteristics. Features include search and filter options and the ability to download a list of operating CHP systems and national-level summary tables. More than 120 CHP Project Profiles compiled by the CHP TAPs can be searched by state, CHP TAP, market sector, North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code, system size, technology/prime mover, fuel, thermal energy use, and year installed. The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) for Resiliency Accelerator supports consideration of CHP and other distributed generation solutions for critical infrastructure resiliency planning at the state, local, and utility levels. As a collaborative effort with stakeholders, the Accelerator is developing tools, templates, and other resources to promote deployment of CHP at critical infrastructure facilities. - The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability (OE) undertook this study to assess the potential sea level rise (SLR) and storm surge risks to energy assets in major Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) for specific cities in the United States. For purposes of the study, the MSAs (cities) include: Baltimore, MD Boston, MA Houston, TX Los Angeles, CA Miami, FL Mobile, AL New Orleans, LA New York, NY Norfolk, VA Philadelphia, PA These MSAs were chosen given their proximity to the coast, their geographical representation, past exposure to significant storm events and potential exposure to SLR and storm surge. For the purpose of this analysis, two storm categories were examined. Category 1 storms were analyzed to illustrate the effects of exacerbation from SLR on smaller storms. This study does not address the potential changes in return intervals of hurricanes, which may be different under future conditions and affect coastal vulnerabilities. To account for potentially stronger storms in the future, the study analyzed a storm one category higher than the highest previously recorded in that area. For example, if a category 3 was the largest known to have occurred within a specific MSA, then this study would analyze a category 4 to address the potential changes in return intervals. - The monthly survey Form EIA-860M, ‘Monthly Update to Annual Electric Generator Report’ supplements the annual survey form EIA-860 data with monthly information that monitors the current status of existing and proposed generating units at electric power plants with 1 megawatt or greater of combined nameplate capacity. EIA estimates the current and near-term unit inventory of electric power generating capacity by integrating the information on these surveys along with ongoing EIA research of new units. However, creating this monthly estimate sometimes requires the use of data submitted on the annual EIA-860 before it has been fully verified by EIA. For this reason, reported capacities are EIA’s preliminary estimates of capacity for that month. Estimates will be corrected without specific acknowledgement or explanation in subsequent month’s inventory. - Alternative Fuels Data Center - Overview of tail pipe emissions from hybrid vehicles nationally, by state __Emissions from Hybrid and Plug-In Electric Vehicles__ Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and all-electric vehicles (EVs) typically produce lower tailpipe emissions than conventional vehicles do. When measuring well-to-wheel emissions, the electricity source is important: for PHEVs and EVs, part or all of the power provided by the battery comes from off-board sources of electricity. There are emissions associated with the majority of electricity production in the United States. __Electricity Sources and Emissions__ EVs and PHEVs running only on electricity have zero tailpipe emissions, but emissions may be produced by the source of electrical power, such as a power plant. In geographic areas that use relatively low-polluting energy sources for electricity generation, PHEVs and EVs typically have a well-to-wheel emissions advantage over similar conventional vehicles running on gasoline or diesel. In regions that depend heavily on conventional fossil fuels for electricity generation, PEVs may not demonstrate a well-to-wheel emissions benefit. __Direct and Well-to-Wheel Emissions__ Vehicle emissions can be divided into two general categories: air pollutants, which contribute to smog, haze, and health problems; and greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as carbon dioxide and methane. Both categories of emissions can be evaluated on a direct basis and a well-to-wheel basis. Direct emissions are emitted through the tailpipe, as well as through evaporation from the vehicle's fuel system and during the fueling process. EVs produce zero direct emissions. PHEVs produce zero tailpipe emissions when they are in all-electric mode, but they can produce evaporative emissions. And when using the internal combustion engine, PHEVs also produce tailpipe emissions. However, their direct emissions are typically lower than those of comparable conventional vehicles. Well-to-wheel emissions include all emissions related to fuel production, processing, distribution, and use. In the case of gasoline, emissions are produced while extracting petroleum from the earth, refining it, distributing the fuel to stations, and burning it in vehicles. In the case of electricity, most electric power plants produce emissions, and there are additional emissions associated with the extraction, processing, and distribution of the primary energy sources they use for electricity production. The data are derived from the Form EIA-767 "Steam-Electric Plant Operation and Design Report." The files contains data on plant operations and equipment design (including boilers, generators, cooling systems, flue gas desulfurizations, flue gas particulate collectors, and stacks). Beginning in the data year 2001, nuclear plant data were no longer collected by the survey. In 2005, the Form EIA-767 was terminated and did not collect data for 2006.
