The oil shale deposit at El-Lajjun in Central Jordan is the most important indigenous potential source of energy after which definitive information has been developed. The oil shale accumulation occurs at shallow depths and extends over an area of 20 sq. km. and has a stripping ratio of overburden to oil shale of about 0.9:1. It is very uniform in character with an average yield of shale oil by Fischer Assay of 10% by weight.
