Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) is developing an underground test facility (UTF) at a site 45 km northwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta. After nine years of study by AOSTRA and others, the economic feasibility of emplacing horizontal wells at the base of the oil sands reservoir will finally be determined by in reservoir testing.
