Transport for NSW has updated the state’s alphanumeric route numbering dataset to establish a 2025 baseline. While the transition from the legacy ‘shield’ markers to the alphanumeric system was implemented previously, this dataset has been revised to ensure digital data is fully aligned with physical wayfinding signage and current road network conditions. The 2025 baseline route system: This update rationalises route designations and focal points to reflect the current on-road environment. It serves as the foundation for the NSW Route Numbering Strategy, which aims to provide a consistent vision for vehicular wayfinding through to 2050. Route classification and numbers: NSW utilises a two-digit alphanumeric system (numbers 1–99) to identify routes based on their functional significance. In alignment with Australian Standard AS 1742.15, NSW categorises routes into three "MAB" tiers: M: Primary routes of the highest standard and significance. A: Principal routes that link key cities, regional centres and interstate hubs. B: Routes that provide essential links between towns and key arterial roads within the state. National alignment: While the NSW system generally aligns with the nationally consistent "MABC" approach agreed upon by Australian state and territory governments, NSW does not utilise ‘C’ route designations.
